Triple C Housing Opens The Seashell

IN THIS ISSUE

The Seashell, a turn of the century Victorian residence, has been substantially renovated from a rooming house to a less intensive use as a multi-family residence. The site provides project based subsidies coupled with onsite supportive services to nine tenants residing in seven units. This project, and the achievements of the tenants deserve community recognition, and will uplift the lives of others.

Formally established this Spring, The Seashell Supportive Housing Project is the result of collaborative efforts and public support in partnership with New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, New Jersey Department of Human Services/Division of Mental Health Services, The Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH), and New Jersey Community Capital. The architect on the project was Bruce Constant and the contractor was Meadowlands Electric.

Triple C offers affordable and permanent housing opportunities with flexible, person-centered support services that are strengths based, valuing the experiences and contributions of individuals served. The services are geared toward promoting wellness and self-sufficiency with support in personal pursuits ranging from education to employment to home ownership. Triple C is a, grass-roots organization that has helped to make the dream of living self sufficiently with dignity become a reality for those they serve.

Housing Still Out of Reach in NJ

Housing Facts from the Housing and Community Development Network of NJ

  • New Jersey is the fifth most expensive state in the U.S. for renters, with only Hawaii, California, New York, and Massachusetts more expensive. The least expensive states for renters are North Dakota, West Virginia, and South Dakota.

  • The hourly housing wage in New Jersey for a two-bedroom apartment at fair market rent in 2008 is $22.25. This wage has risen 42.6 percent since 2000.

  • Numerous occupations in New Jersey — social service workers, dental lab technicians, emergency dispatchers, preschool teachers, accounting clerks, child care workers, home health aides, school bus drivers, security guards, janitors, hairstylists, receptionists, cashiers and others — pay less than the housing wage.

  • The mean wage for a New Jersey renter is $16.45 an hour, below the housing wage for a modest two-bedroom. At the mean wage, an individual would have to work 54 hours a week to afford a two-bedroom apartment at FMR.

  • At minimum wage — $7.15 an hour — a New Jersey worker would have to work 124 hours a week or over three full jobs a week to afford a two-bedroom at FMR.

  • Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Somerset counties are the most expensive for rentals, with a modest two-bedroom at fair market rent going for a monthly average of $1,340.

  • But due to the varying occupations and wages of the renting population, Cumberland, Passaic and Essex counties are the least affordable for people living there. In Cumberland County, 64 percent of renters cannot afford the fair market rent. In Passaic County, it’s 62 percent, and in Essex County, 61 percent.

  • Over 94,000 tenants cannot afford the fair market rent in Essex County. The same is true for over 91,000 Hudson County renters.

Housing Vouchers are Critical for Ending Family Homelessness
A Research Paper by Jill Khadduri, Abt Associates, Inc

Housing vouchers are successful in helping families exit homelessness and can protect poor families from becoming homeless. The idea that adequate amounts of affordable rental housing would prevent and end family homelessness is intuitive. It is also firmly grounded in the research literature on the causes of homelessness and on the efficacy of programs that seek to end homelessness for individual families. This paper summarizes those research findings and draws out their implications for housing policymakers on all levels of government—in the first instance, for the federal government, which carries the responsibility for adequately funding the Housing Choice Voucher Program and for setting the parameters for the use of those housing subsidies.

New Book on Leadership in Mental Health System

Principled Leadership in Mental Health Systems and Programs
by William Anthony and Kevin Huckshorn
.

The Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University has published a new book entitled, Principled Leadership in Mental Health Systems and Programs by William Anthony and Kevin Huckshorn.  Anthony and Huckshorn interviewed leaders at all levels in the mental health field who have shown the ability to transform their organizations, including federal administrators, commissioners, agency directors, program managers. What they found is that big or small, public or private, and independent of professional discipline. It is the quality and effectiveness of its leadership that fuels a successful organization. From their extensive interviews with these exemplary leaders, Anthony and Huckshorn advance eight leadership principles and accompanying tasks that they found to be critical for effective leadership.

Principled Leadership is recommended for educators, directors, managers, or anyone interested in becoming a leader or improving his/her leadership skills. Report on State Mandates for Benefits

A new report is available from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration's (SAMHSA's) Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS). The report focuses on state-mandated benefits, state laws regulating mental health and addiction treatment workers, and state-recognized mental health clinicians with authority to prescribe psychotropic medications. The report is divided into three main sections. The first section describes the current status of state-mandated insurance coverage and identifies those states that require insurance companies to provide coverage for those they insure who have mental or substance use disorders. The second section outlines the type of coverage and diagnostic conditions to which the insurance applies. Finally, the third section provides an in-depth analysis of the authority granted by states to nurse practitioners and physician assistants to prescribe psychotropic medications.
