One of our core functions is to strengthen supportive housing through public policy. As such we are involved at all times in reaching out to public officials in the executive branch, legislative branch and through the courts. Our current projects include:

1. Replenishing the Special Needs Housing Trust Fund which is now depleted. The SNHTF, begun in 2005 under Governor Codey's leadership, provided capital dollars for approximately 2,000 persons with disabilities to live in permanent supportive housing. Please join this effort to renew the fund by logging onto to become acquainted with the campaign's steering committee, to join as a member agency, to write testimonials and meet with your local legislative leaders and other public officials to spread the word!

2. We continually join our partner advocates, The Housing and Community Development Network of NJ, Corporation for Supportive Housing, Monarch Housing Associates, and the Fair Share Housing Center. We work with these leading housing organizations to support or speak out against specific pieces of legislation and proposed regulation, and may also join in court challenges to make the supportive housing industry viable and successful. Currently we are working together to keep municipal housing trust funds (an important local source of capital dollars for affordable housing projects) from being returned to the general treasury and instead maintained and dedicated to affordable housing.

SHA Policy Position

We are pleased to issue a Policy Position on Supportive Housing in NJ. This two page piece is a compilation of issues and priorities for a strengthened supportive housing industry that has been composed with input from providers, consumers, families and government representatives. We invite you to share the statement and to work with us to improve opportunities in housing and supports for people with special needs.
