Description: Founded in 1976, the Community Health Law Project (CHLP) is a New Jersey nonprofit advocacy and legal service organization dedicated to assisting low-income individuals with disabilities and the frail elderly. While traditionally focused on these populations, CHLP has expanded its services through medical-legal partnerships to address a broader range of civil law issues.

CHLP empowers clients to live independently and contribute to their communities by providing legal support in areas like Social Security benefits, housing advocacy, family law, healthcare access, consumer law, and discrimination. Its clients include individuals with chronic mental illness, developmental disabilities, mobility impairments, sensory impairments, HIV/AIDS, and more recently, substance use disorders and chronic health conditions.

With over 60 staff members and 50 years of experience, CHLP has served more than 100,000 clients and handles approximately 5,000 cases annually. It also educates thousands through conferences, hotlines, and its website. Headquartered in South Orange, New Jersey, CHLP operates offices statewide in Neptune, Bloomfield, Elizabeth, Hamilton, and Westmont, with satellite locations in Hoboken, Toms River, Mount Holly, and Galloway.
